GDI Summer News

We are just a few weeks away from the Fourth of July holiday and the anniversary of the ADA (July 26). These dates may seem unrelated, yet both are dates that remind us to celebrate independence.  Our country’s independence, and the independence of those living with disabilities.  Twenty-seven years ago, our country embraced equal access and equal opportunity for people with disabilities. Global Disability Inclusion is honored to have worked with some of the world’s most recognized brands to create job opportunities for people with disabilities, and we thank you for believing in the abilities of individuals with disabilities.  If you haven’t started your disability inclusion journey, we provide a resource below, and we invite you to join the movement. #DisabilityCompetitive

GDI's Latest Blog Post: Teaching Inclusion Early
We often talk about the importance of teaching inclusion at a young age. My niece Annalise, 12, is a great example of how learning about differences early in life leads to greater inclusion and acceptance as a child grows older.  Check out our recent blog post to see how Annalise's earliest exposure to a child with a disability positively impacted her, and how the experience inspired her in writing a 6th grade speech about heroes.
Ruderman Symposium on Philanthropy and Inclusion

Representing the Poses Family Foundation, GDI President Meg O’Connell attended the Ruderman Symposium on Philanthropy and Inclusion, sponsored by The Ruderman Family Foundation, on June 15 in New York City.  The purpose of this event was to introduce other foundations to disability-related funding opportunities.  Speakers addressed how disability is part of social justice, equality, civil rights, education, and health care.
Other attendees of the event included Ragdale Foundation, Caterpillar FoundationFord FoundationFISA FoundationICD - Institute for Career Development, Light For The WorldLiberty Mutual Insurance, US Trust- Bank of America Private Wealth Management, Jay Ruderman, Council on Foundations, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, UJA-Federation of New York, Genesis Philanthropy Group, Mitsubishi Electric, Bridges From School to Work, Craig H. ILO Global Business & Disability Network Summit

On June 20, GDI President Meg O’Connell attended the International Labour Organization (ILO) Global Business & Disability Network in New York. The ILO is a United Nations agency dealing with labor problems, particularly international labor standards, social protection, and work opportunities for all.  The invitation-only event provided an opportunity to hear about the global trends on disability inclusion from Cisco, L'Oréal, Repsol, and Accenture.

The US Department of Labor Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) has recently released the latest Disability Employment Statistics (May 2017).  While the numbers show record low unemployment, the unemployment rate for persons with disabilities is three times higher than the rate of those without disabilities.

Workplace Initiative Program

The Workplace Initiative helps companies recruit, hire, and retain the largest untapped labor pool in the country – people with disabilities.  Our President, Meg O’Connell, was one of the authors of the newly-released Workplace Initiative DIY guide to assist companies on how to start or expand a disability inclusion program.  The free on-line tool was launched through the Workplace Initiative program, which aims to connect companies to people with disabilities and find them sustainable employment.

Check out the recent issue of DiversAbility magazine, for which GDI President Meg O’Connell has contributed articles from time to time, featuring a video from Accenture’s “Inclusion Starts With I” campaign.
